2nd son of my father (2nd of 10), 1st born (of 3) and only son of my mother. My 1st 18 years: lego creations, comic books, dreaming, drawing. I discovered a passion for surfing, field hockey, math and strategy (games). I was challenged to become myself. Next 18 years (born 27-04-1971): I developed my passions for surfing and hockey. I discovered talent for project management, team leading, pioneering, and co creating. I studied Human Movement Sciences, world class business leaders and their businesses, and (modern) business books. For 6 years I worked at MLT/amaseu: I did logistics, became project leader of journeys for CEO's and their organizations. I accompanied, guided and coached many CEO's and leaders, I lead operation teams of project leaders and their supports in many countries in the world.
La madrugada means 'the rise of a new day' in Spanish. It's a great word, and a great moment that comes back every day. For free! It's a gift, another step into the unknown. I like that. This is why I love to travel, and spend time abroad. I did that when I was studying, in Bilbao and Boston. And in my younger years my parents had already shown my sister, 2 brothers and me around in Western Europe. I still travel a lot. For work and for fun. It is always inspiring to get connected to people in other parts of the world. But also at home: Amsterdam has the greatest variety of nationalities of any city on earth. Imagine how that sounds on the streets, and what richness it offers in colours, smells, food... But I also intend to get connected to what else is there. Like nature. I enjoy that, with my daughter Zaina ('01), son Manu ('09) and my love Monique, in whatever I do.
I designed and executed (in co-creation) a successful multiphase complex change program (>3 yrs) for a multinational business unit (>20.000), for groups from 6-1500 people. Complex and situational content and guiding, full service operations teams (>200). All in all, I made mistakes, went through a deep valley, feared to fail. But I bounced back, performed to the highest standards, learned on many levels, confronted my ego, fell in love, got confidence, ambition and found that "I've got nothing to lose, so there's no need to hold back". I am challenged to create and develop The Future Firm to my own and Gijs' high standards of success, and be a world class and proud father of Merijn (Sept. 2004) and Femke (Dec. 2006) and partner of Sandra. I feel challenged to create and contribute to a sustainable and firm future.
After graduating, I worked with friends in a communication company. Then I chose to become a text-freelancer (De Groene Amsterdammer, RTLNieuws, funda...), taking more steps into the new, and feeding my interest for history, languages, organization dynamics. I met many people, and after a few years entered MLT/ amaseu, for which I organized tens of journeys of discovery for thousands of people within corporate organizations. I found space for 3 of my greatest passions: personal development, social value creation and travel. In spring 2007, I chose to continue my path of growth in my own organization, together with my beta-buddy Victor. Now it is time to contribute. To people, organizations, society, the world. I want to help create awareness around the endless possibilities of human kind. Starting from the self.
Since end 2008, we have been part of a design team of AkzoNobel Decorative Coatings. This BU strives to bring meaning, spirit and community to the organization and society, and wishes to enforce this through leadership development on a global level. We co-created in Deco's organizational development branch in design and set-up of a program that is currently being executed worldwide through leadership journeys. We coach leaders to lead the process, we facilitate the process ourselves, and support HR & Communications to contribute to the roll-out of the process to all levels around the globe.
During this trajectory, we had the privilige to be working with Deco's people in China, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Spain, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, UK, US, Canada. In many cases we also prepared and lead local teams to put all this into place logistically.
Leaders always want to grow. But growth you cannot achieve only by yourself. With a little outside support and guidance into unknown areas of awareness, leaders can make jumps in their development. Since we started this business in 2007, we have been asked many times to offer personal coaching to individual participants in organizational processes that we deliver. We could not for all, since their was simply not enough time for that. But we started coaching different executives and managing directors in their personal development when they asked us for it. Usually during 3 or 4 1:1 sessions on outside locations, mostly in nature which vary per session, we dig for half a day into growth of self-awareness and an individual development action plan in both personal and working lives.
We believe that raising awareness contributes to making the world a better place. Usually we do so through leadership development, mostly within coroporate organizations. In the Future Firm Foundation we wish to bring our believe to young talents, students and boarding school children. Early 2010, we taught lessons on having your own business to children of the Weekendschool (http://www.imcweekendschool.nl/). We delivered workshops on talent branding during the Spark Event at the Hogeschool Holland to students aged 19-21. Daily, we support The VisieNL foundation (http://www.visienederland.nl/) in administration and leadership development. We wish to contribute more, and launch more programs like this ourselves. We use our international network to do this also outside The Netherlands.
In the summer of 2008, we started a trajectory for Schiphol's CIO, together with Martijn Sjoorda of Fresh Orange. It was aimed at vision & strategy creation, and teambuilding. We went on an offsite in nature for three days, to gain inspiration and depth from being out of daily references and routines.
Building a (top) management team in the context of an industry without a winning concept is a hard nut to crack. But the first steps were easier set than expected. The creation of more (self-)awareness will support each team member to be operating and excelling as soon as possible, as they all agreed upon.
As a facilitator within the Oxford Leadership Academy team, we facilitated parts of a Self Managing Leadership course to the international management of Telefónica. This former Spanish state-owned telecommunications organization, has in recent years evolved into a global company with a workforce of almost a quarter million.
Whilst head facilitator Brian Bacon took the top-managers through the plenary SML-sessions in English during three days on location, we offered them SML dialogue-workshops in smaller groups in Spanish. The SML contributed highly to a raise in awareness around personal leadership and a personal action plan. The course enables participants to gain depth through the presence of a facilitator, and they continue their process afterwards with help of a coach.
After having visited an SML-train the trainers session in Oxford, we were invited by the Oxford Leadership Academy and Vedior's then CEO to assist on running a 3 day Self-Managing Leadership-course. This course was meant for the top & local middle management of this then one of the world's largest international staffing services companies.
As facilitators, we supported the process of implementation of leadership and consciousness in small groups of 8-12 people through sharing & dialogue sessions. This SML turned out to contribute strongly to a raise in awareness around personal leadership, and supported participants in developing a personal action plan.
